What is a fish club meeting like?

You found our website, come visit us for a meeting!

You found us and if you are here and bothering to read this, you are probably wondering what a fish club meeting is like. We meet the Second Tuesday of each month at the Hiawatha Community Center and we invite YOU to check us out!

Here is how a typical meeting flows:

Area Updates

-What is happening in the hobby around the area? Swap meets, auctions, special speakers, new shops, info about all of these topics are shared.

Published topic

-We are able to bring in knowledgeable speakers from across the aquarium hobby. Either in person or via Zoom. You watch them on YouTube, read their publish articles, hear about their exploits, now come to a meeting and get your questions answered in person.

-Some months it internal to the club when we talk about our tips, tricks, and secrets to success with our own aquariums. It is the Show and Tell of the fish hobby.

Mystery fish

-A Local shop donate a fish

-Clues are written describing the fish

-Everyone shouts out their guess as to its identity.

-First on to identify it correctly takes the fish home. Or you can always place it in the Mini-auction at the end of the meeting.

Bowl Show

The bowl show is a friendly, monthly competition where members display their fish or plants in small, transportable containers (or bowls). Each month features a specific species or family: Killifish, Livebearers, South American Cichlids, etc.. Entries are judged based on color, size, and health. The primary goal is to encourage the keeping of various species and foster community. Showing off

your fish which we love to do.

Points are accumulated through the year and a plaque is awarded at the end of the year. See additional details on our website.

Mini-auction

-Members are able to bring fish, plants, and other aquarium items to be auctioned off at the meeting. 100% goes to the seller.

-Prices are always very reasonable and the quality is top notch because you know exactly where that fish came from and your water is likely the same as the water it came from.

Breeder’s Award Program (BAP) and Horticultural Award Program (HAP)

These fry and plants are only auctioned at the mini-auction. This gives you the opportunity to ask, “How did you do that?” BAP &

HAP funds go to the club to support these programs. See details elsewhere on this website.

Attendance award

-Cash award for attending a meeting

-Membership list is numbered

-Numbers are drawn at the meeting

-If your number is drawn and you are in attendance, you win!

-Award begins at $10 and goes up $1 each month the name drawn is not in attendance.

Table conversation

That great opportunity to talk fish with your fellow hobbyists. Ask questions and share accomplishments. Priceless!

Are you still wondering if EIAA meetings are for you? If you have read this far then 100% yes, these meetings are for you. The meetings draw people of all ages. Our VP's 12 year old son loves coming to the meetings to learn and buy at the mini-auction. We all have different interests in the hobby. Some members love to spawn unique fish. Some love to grow unique plants. And some members, just want to keep their aquariums alive. There is room for everyone in the EIAA!
